What Our Orca Represents

orca slide

The Orca image is the form of Alaska Native artwork which represents the traditional knowledge.  The conference theme is “Our Harsh and Fragile Ocean”.  We wish to combine modern technology and traditional knowledge to protect the fragile from the harsh;  to allow the fragile to survive in a harsh environment; or to mitigate the effects of the harsh upon the fragile.

The Orca itself represents harsh as it is a most fearsome creature of the ocean, yet at the same the Orca is fragile in that it is a living being subject to the vagaries of the environment.

The star in the Orca’s eye represents the North Star for guidance and direction or for vision.

Spread around the Orca are technological symbols (gears, propellors, electronic circuits) to represent the modern technology.
